In Hyderabad, amid concerns surrounding the purity of the renowned Tirupati laddu, artisans at the base of Tirumala are preparing to seek a geographical indication for their craft. For more than a century, these skilled artisans have been crafting intricate wooden statues, including life-like idols of various deities like Kalyana Balaji, Raja and Rani dolls, children's toys, ornate doors and windows, pooja mandapams, wooden pillars, and furniture out of Madhavamala wood. The Sri Balaji Wood Carvings Mutually Aided Cooperative Society Limited, representing 510 artisans from 309 families famous for their Madhavamala wood carvings, will soon submit a GI application with the assistance of NABARD. This application would mark the 20th GI application from Andhra Pradesh, according to GI practitioner Subhajit Saha, who will support the artisans in obtaining the geographical indication alongside NABARD.
